Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and DPN

New information has recently been published linking low Vitamin D levels with many serious health issues. Be sure that you know your Vitamin D level.
Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy and Vitamin D
One newly released study vitamin-d-and-diabetic-neuropathy has determined that vitamin D levels in the Diabetic population and particularly the Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) population are often low.
Vitamin D is an important nutrient, and a low level has been implicated in many pathologies including osteoporosis, dementia, depression and certain cancers. It may be involved in DPN too.
However, we need to be careful to not equate "correlation" with "causation" and thereby run headlong into another problem. But, very likely, if you are found to be low in Vitamin D, your doctor will recommend a supplement.
How Can I Know if I Need More Vitamin D?
A simple blood test by your Doctor can determine if you're getting enough Vitamin D in your diet.
Adequate dietary intake is helpful but often is not enough. Supplementation can be safely added to a healthy regimen.
In general, a supplement of 1000-2000 IU has been found safe and effective. A healthy dose of sunshine each day (15-20 minutes) can be beneficial too, as humans need sunshine to convert vitamin D into its active form.
But do take care, because excessive intake of vitamin D, or any of the fat soluble vitamins, such as A or E, can be dangerous.
Ask your doctor to include a Vitamin D level as part of your regular blood laboratory testing.
