Pre-Diabetes and Neuropathy

There has been quite a bit of news lately regarding “Pre-Diabetes”.
With an ever increasing population of at-risk individuals in the US and the world, this is a critical health issue. This condition is not consistently defined, but can be characterized by a higher than ideal, and likely slowly increasing, hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c).
HbA1c is a blood test likely done as part of a routine check up if pre-diabetes is suspected; such as in family history, obesity or previous gestational diabetes. In reality, it’s a test that measures your average blood sugar level over a roughly three month period. The result, in which normal range is approximately 5.8- 5.9 , can be extrapolated to what your daily blood sugar has been over the past 3 months.
This is opposed to a standard blood sugar test that only shows the current value… think of it as a snapshot versus HbA1C’s movie. HbA1C can also be used to monitor the diet and lifestyle changes that can be applied to controlling diabetes or pre-diabetes. Comparing the data across months or years gives your doctor the information that diet, medication and exercise are… or aren’t, working.
Why is this important?
Because the presence of a slowly (or quickly) elevating HbA1C is a reliable predictor of full blown diabetes. Add to this that prevention of the effects of diabetes, such as neuropathy, can be managed or avoided entirely if addressed early. Even if diabetes is inevitable, early diagnosis and management is key to lessening the effects upon your body.
Get out ahead of the potential complications with common sense actions. Identifying lifestyle choices that are contributing to an elevated blood sugar and addressing them is critical. Diabetes is a manageable disease if you are armed with knowledge and a determination to avoid the pitfalls inherent in it. Keep your weight normalized, exercise regularly, eat sensibly and take medications and supplements that facilitate good nutrition.
