Tingling, Tickling or Stabbing Feelings in my Feet - Is it Peripheral Neuropathy?

Peripheral neuropathy is nerve pain caused by damaged nerves. Nerve pain is most often described as tingling, tickling, stabbing or burning pain in the hands, arms, legs and feet.

Peripheral neuropathy causes include diabetes (the leading cause) in addition to traumatic injuries, infections, vitamin deficiencies, chemotherapy, and alcoholism to name just a few. Dozens of other causes of peripheral neuropathy can be found by visiting the Center for Peripheral Neuropathy’s website.

To determine if the tingling, tickling, or stabbing feelings in your feet are due to peripheral neuropathy, it helps to understand how the peripheral nervous system works. Per the Mayo Clinic, “Your peripheral nervous system sends information from your brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to the rest of your body.”

That said, the overwhelming majority of people who are ultimately diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy do describe the sensation of nerve pain as a feeling of burning, weakness, numbness, and tingling. Some describe it as a tickling feeling. This may be accompanied by or progress to sharp, stabbing, or shock-like feelings or a tremendous sensitivity to touch. Ultimately, peripheral neuropathy can lead to severe muscle weakness, compromised coordination which can lead to falls, and worsening numbness in the feet which spreads to the legs.

Tingling, tickling or stabbing feelings in your feet is certainly a symptom of peripheral neuropathy, particularly if you have other risk factors for peripheral neuropathy such as:

  • Alcohol abuse
  • Autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and lupus
  • Diabetes (diagnosed or undiagnosed)
  • Exposure to toxins (including drug use and exposure to toxins from environment or at work)
  • Genetic predisposition (family members have or had peripheral neuropathy)
  • Infections (HIV, Lyme disease, Shingles, Hepatitis-C, etc.)
  • Kidney disorders/disease
  • Liver disorders/disease
  • Nutritional deficiencies, particularly B Vitamins
  • Repetition of the same body movements (at work, or as an athlete, etc.)

If you have tingling, tickling, or stabbing feelings in your feet, there’s a pretty good likelihood you may be suffering from peripheral neuropathy. Obviously, no condition should be diagnosed over the internet so you will need to see a physician. You should also consider correcting potential Vitamin B deficiencies as a natural treatment for neuropathy, because the earlier you start, the more likely you can help to heal the nerves.
